Later on, things started to change and get worse. In the beginning, right after Kino found the pearl it brought them good luck they believed because it cured Coyotito. How has Kino’s life changed while having the pearl? He knows that if he throws it back into the water or sells it he will lose his soul. I believe that Kino has such a strong feeling about this pearl because as said in the quote above it has become a part of his soul. Why does Kino have such a feeling towards/about this pearl? It also means that Kino is telling himself to not give in to the evil of the pearl and that he needs to stay with his religion and stay with God. The meaning of this quote is that the pearl that Kino has found isn’t just a pearl he has but it has become a part of him and if he gives it away or sells it, it will take his soul as well. The meaning of the quote “This pearl has become my soul,” said Kino. Coyotito is not quiet though and the trackers hear him thinking it is a coyote and shoots right at the same time Kino attacks and Kino kills all the trackers and Coyotito gets shot in the process as well. So he tells Juana to keep Coyotito quiet while he goes out to kill them. Kino knew he had to do something about them so he heads out right before the sun comes up to kill them. Two of them on foot and one on horseback and they all have guns. While they are resting, Kino hears the trackers coming. Kino breaks down and accepts the fact that the pearl has done them no good and evil has taken over so they have to run away before the trackers find them.Īfter walking for a while they decide to stop and rest a while. Not long after they go to their house it catches on fire and they come running out with very few things in their hands. When he finally comes back to his senses and realizes all of the evil he has done he knows him and his family have to leave right away. Knowing they have to leave right away, Kino sends his wife and baby to go get what they need from their brush house and meet him back at his brother’s house. He killed a man because he was trying to steal the pearl and he beats up Juana because she was going to throw the pearl in the water. He had lost it and evil had filled him and he didn’t even know himself.
